WaterSafe is a United Kingdom register of approved plumbing contractors, bringing together the contractor approval schemes operated by water suppliers and by industry bodies into a single searchable list.[1] Its relevance to the regulatory framework is that work carried out by an approved contractor is treated differently under the notification requirements of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.[2]

Approved contractors and notification[edit]

Regulation 5 requires advance notification to the water undertaker of certain categories of installation work and allows the undertaker to consent with or without conditions.[2] Where work is carried out by an approved contractor, the scheme provides a route by which the contractor certifies compliance, which is the practical benefit of approval to both installer and customer.

Approval concerns the person and their competence to work to the Regulations. It is distinct from product approval, which concerns fittings and is operated under the WRAS scheme by a separate company, Water Regulations Approvals Scheme Limited.[3] WaterSafe itself is administered by Water Regs UK.[4]

Scope[edit]

The register covers the United Kingdom, which distinguishes it from the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 themselves, which extend to England and Wales.[5] In Scotland water and sewerage services are provided by Scottish Water under the Water Industry (Scotland) Act 2002 and the fittings requirements are set by the Water Supply (Water Fittings) (Scotland) Byelaws 2014.[6][4]

Membership of the register is not a statutory requirement for carrying out plumbing work, and its absence does not make work unlawful. It is evidence of competence and of participation in a certification route, not a licence. ADI Leak Detection states that it is a WaterSafe approved contractor.[7]
